Congratulations to Darwin Fellow Professor Jeremy Adelman, who has been elected as a Fellow of the British Academy, the UK’s national academy for the  humanities and social sciences. Founded in 1902, the Academy’s purpose is to “deepen understanding of people, societies and cultures, enabling everyone to learn, progress and prosper.”

A historian, and creator and director of the Global History Lab, Professor Adelman is the author of over a dozen books. From 2014-2023 he held the position of Henry Charles Lea Professor of History at Princeton University, moving to Cambridge following the appointment of his wife, Professor Deborah Prentice, as Vice-Chancellor. Born in Canada, he studied Political Economy at the University of Toronto before completing an MSc in Economic History at the LSE, and a doctorate in Modern History at Oxford.

Professor Susan J. Smith PBA, the newly appointed President of the British Academy, and former Mistress of Girton College, said:

“One of my first acts as the incoming President of the British Academy is to welcome this year’s newly elected Fellows. What a line-up! … Champions of research excellence, every new Fellow enlarges our capacity to interpret the past, understand the present, and shape resilient, sustainable futures. It is a privilege to extend my warmest congratulations to them all.”

An interview with Professor Adelman will appear in the forthcoming summer issue of the Darwinian magazine.
